For scanning images, try VueScan. For OCR, there's OmniPage Pro X. Both are shareware. I believe VueScan works with more brands of scanners than OPP does at this point.

well, seems like we had this thread just a short while ago and nothing has changed. Vuescan has no plans to support umax usb scanners and OmniPage already does. but who does mostly ocr scanning? umax just needs to get their sh*t together before we all jummp ship. Hell, i'd rather spend $100 on a new scanner that works than $40 to make this thing do what it should in the first place.

VueScan works wonderfully with my HP 5300CXi. It does a really good job. Very well worth the shareware fee.

Lucky...

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones... My Epson Perfection 610 works fine with VueScan, which has much better control over color than the original Epson software.

What really gets me is that Epson had on their website (might even still be there) that their scanner drivers would be released by the end of Jan. 2002. Here it is February, and no scanner drivers.

It's kind of funny that one of the two companies with OS X scanner drivers (HP being the other), Agfa, has discontinued their scanners. They don't even sell them anymore, yet they were STILL able to get OS X drivers out the door.

Anyway, I've come to like the way Vuescan works, and gladly paid the $40. Even if Epson get's their act together, I'll still use Vuescan, as I can scan directly to disk if I want, something Epsons software didnt do...

Vuescan doesn't work for Umax USB scanners, as they themselves outline on their website... this has also been discussed in these boards at great length.

Despite saying they're working on drivers (yeah, right -- they've been saying that for MONTHS), one has to conclude that basically, Umax are complete crap.

End of story

Funny, I've been using the capture feature in Acrobat 4 for all my OCR work. I imagine that Acrobat 5.05 should have the same feature in Mac OS X (I still need to upgrade in the near future). My wife does all her scanning into Acrobat as well, it is really a nice little app.

(Acrobat has the same type of plug-ins folder that Photoshop has and uses the same plug-ins that are used for aquiring images from the scanner that Photoshop does.)
