iTunes 4

Hey, i've been hearing things about iTunes 4 coming out this summer with the new release of OS X (Panther 10.3). It will have a system preference, better support for ipod (i think that you will be able to take of songs from the ipod and keep it on your itunes library) and better sound quality (how can it get better?).

I highly doubt this part. There was a reason Apple disabled transferring songs from the iPod to the Mac. The sticker on the front of the iPod when you first get it new says it all.

"Don't steal music."

People could easily take literally thousands of songs to their friend's house and copy them over. I suppose Apple doesn't want this.

Maybe if you could register your iPod with the computer you wish to use it with, it might remedy the problem a bit...

Well maybe Apple will come up with some technology that lets you copy songs from iPod to iTunes for playing but not burning and not being able to get to the mp3 files. Like when you hook up iPod to a mac you see the songs but you can't do anything with them except play and organize.

You can already play iPod songs in iTunes, if that's what you mean.

I mean, you could drag a song off an iPods playlist into iTunes, eject your iPod and the song would still be there. But, like with iPod, you'd see the song but you can't do anything with them except play and organize. The user would have the song, yet not be able to copy, burn, or share it.

Does that make more since?

If the song is still playable after you unplug the iPod, it is on your HD somewhere, and someone will make a program that copies the song from its protected place to your iTunes library so you can share/burn/copy it. Automatically. And this cannot be prevented without some sort of DRM software, which I and many others (including Apple, it seems) are opposed to. Even if the files were re-encoded to a proprietary format and absorbed into one large file, you could still use Audio Hijack to get a non-copy-protected copy.
