Greener IT - also applies to peripherals

I am writing concerning what is generally called Greener IT. I know that Apple has made efforts and this is good.

Now maybe the turn should be for Harman Kardon who, sometime ago, sold me some their Soundsticks audio speakers. Recently, the transformer died, and of course, Harman Kardon had a very specific connector plug.

So I contacted their resellers and to make a long story short, I should throw out the speakers and get new ones because the transformer is no longer available.

Someone must explain to me the eco-friendliness of developping a specific transformer, then discontinuing it, so that if it breaks, the customer must go shopping again.

It's true that HK should be far more helpful. My tranny died too. I tried talking to the shop that sold me the speakers with my iMac. They tried to help but had no clue. I contacted some companies that specialise in transformers and they never got back to me. I got fed up so today I went to Maplin (electrical nerdy shop) with the dead HK transformer. I bought a 'laptop power adaptor' and a multimeter (to check the correct polarity) and now all is working perfectly. All I did was splice the strange HK connector onto the end of the new cable and selected the correct power settings and now I have my lovely Soundsticks back.
