Re-installing XP Pro on Tiger

I'm on a MacBook 2.0gHz running 10.4.11.

I've had a Windows (XP Pro) partition for a couple of years, installed with the then beta version of Bootcamp. I've used it for music production, but it hasn't worked well with my external audio interface. So I'd like to do a complete re-install of Windows.

First I need to know what Bootcamp version works best, and is there an officially released version of it available for Tiger? I'd rather not upgrade to Leopard as I've no other compelling reason to do so.

To be able to use Boot Camp officially, you need to be running Leopard. I don't think you can get the final version of Boot Camp to run on anything less.

It simply won't run under Tiger? If so, that fuckin' sucks. Is the older version still to be found?

The older version was a beta, and it's since expired. Yes, I do agree with you that it does suck. However, you might want to take a look at a project called rEFIt which might help you get XP on there as well (not sure if it can do it without the aid of Boot Camp though).

Thanks. I've managed to get a link to the 1.4 beta, and have installed it (after setting the clock back).

Now, before I do a clean re-install of Windows (which would mean having to tediously re-register my numerous audio applications) I'd like to see if updating the Mac drivers is enough to solve the massive issues with audio.

So my question at this point is: how do I extract and install these drivers, without running the whole Bootcamp setup?

You help is really appreciated.

Well, the drivers disc that's created by Boot Camp should have everything you need. Of course, since you're dealing with the beta and a changed time setting, I don't know how reliable it will be when you have to set it back. Remember that even for Software Updates in OS X you have to have the time set properly.

I recommend giving rEFIt a try as that should be a better (and cheaper) solution than updating to Leopard for the final Boot Camp.

Thanks again. I just think rEFITt is over my head. I'd rather at least try to see if the 1.4 Bootcamp drivers will improve the situation.

Once I have them burned to a disk, how do I install them?

I believe that the Boot Camp Assistant will get that going for you. It's been a while since I've played with it so I'm not exactly sure. It will either take care of making sure that the drivers are preinstalled, or you would have to load the disc from within Windows (it should autorun if I'm not mistaken) and install them that way.
