Cd/dvd Recorder Not Found

I am working on a G5 with OS X 10.3.9. I ran the software update recently, which I never do, and it updated some stuff including Firmware. After that, my CD/DVD recorder will not work. It will read CDs, but not burn them. I have updated Roxio Toast Titanium to 7.0, but keeps saying "Recorder not found". iTunes will also not recognize the recorder. My computer is using an internal Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-117D superdrive. There are 3 others in my department with identical systems. When I connect to them and do a search for pioneer, it shows up in the extensions. It will not show up anywhere on my computer when I do a search, even when I copy their extension to my computer.
Does this make sense? Do you have any ideas why this is happening, and what the solution might be?
I have grown VERY frustrated with it.
