TomTom satnav and USB 2.0 - "broken" on iBook

I have a TomTom GO 700 with a 2.5GB minidisc inside. It is a USB 2.0 device.

I can backup/copy the disc to my G4 Quicksilver via USB 1.1, but it takes an hour.

I bought an iBook 1.42 which has USB 2.0. The TomTom GO 700 connects and is recognised but any copy/backup hangs after about 30 MB.

I've tried with both items on mains power.
I've tried via a powered Belkin USB 2.0 hub.
Still hangs.

My wife has an older TomTomGO with a 1GB SD card. If I put this card in a card reader, I can transfer the data to the iBook at USB 2.0 speeds.

Any suggestions? I use the TomTom GO away from home so updating etc. is one reason I bought the iBook.

There are reports on the TomTom forum that you can backup the GO 700 to a Mac Mini at USB 2 speeds.
