Hitachi DZ-HS301SW frustration

Right, so I'm relatively new to the whole mac thing but so far I have found that whatever you want to do in windows, expect it to be 10x harder to do on mac. Whatever, I can live with this.

Just recently I bought a Hitachi dvd/hdd camcorder and when I spoke with the salesperson he said that its compatible with macs, which it is. However, when i try to open videos uploaded from the hard drive of the camera (I cannot use the dvd option because macbooks don't take the 8cm dvds which I knew at time of purchase. [I have a normal pc waiting for me at home]) I can't use anything to view them. they are saved onto my comp as a .mpg file but I can't use quicktime to convert them to anything useable in iMovie for editing purposes becuase an error pops up saying "this movie cannot be opened".
I have VLC which will play them, but I want to edit them and cannot export them through VLC either.

Any help would be great, and if you need more info just ask.

Jan
