Question MacBook Pro freezes when plugging back in...

I hope this hasn't been asked before, I just kind of skimmed through the search...

My fiancé recently bought a 17' MacBook Pro (arrived less than a month ago). He loves OSX, but has had problems with Apple support in the past, so he's been worried about this purchase, being as it's a fairly good chunk of money.

For history, his last Apple laptop was the G3 iBook with the logic board issues. And the guys at the nearest Apple Store were fairly rude to him when he would take it in. And he got it back the last time with a broken battery. Which we replaced... then had to exchange for the recall.

He did get Apple Care with this one, but I'm hoping it's a simple fix...

We installed a new wireless network in the house before the MacBook Pro arrived (Wireless-N). Unfortunetly, the new phones thet were bought just before interfere with the signal. There are currently four computers in the house in the network, and only two are directly connected to the router (My old, G3 iMac, and his PC). When the phones are answered, the new Vista machine down stairs loses internet.

I also discovered that, if auto update of date and time is left on, and the phones RING, the machine freezes. The laptop is no where near either of the phones. I turned that off, now it just interrupts whatever I'm doing online until the phone is hung up.

... Speaking of the time and date, the MacBook Pro can't keep what time it is straight. Even with the auto-update on and set in our time zone, it's four hours behind sometimes.

Now, we have noticed a couple of times that if the MacBook Pro is plugged back in, it will randomly crash.

Needless to say, the idea that the laptop may be having some issues already makes my fiancé nervous, especially after the issues with the iBook.

I've personally never owned an Apple laptop, only desktops. I know that, in years past, some of them were hit and miss. But, again, no first hand experience.

Has anyone heard/dealt with the random crashes/time issues? He did put Bootcamp on and does have Vista installed... it's the version below the basic one. But I don't know if he has experienced the problems with that side as well as the OSX side.

Thanks for any help!

I wonder if dealing with Applecare over the phone would work better than depending on the store. When I had to have a laptop fixed, they sent me a box in the mail to return the laptop to them. Less than a week later it came back repaired.

Now, with your wireless N network. I'm not a huge expert, but I read there are two bands. One of the bands doesn't interfere with N. I think it's 5 GHz. You might look into that.

Again, my suggestion would be to call Applecare at Apple's 800 number.

Thanks so much! We are going to replace the phones in the house. The nearest one just cuts the AirPort off when the phone is near the laptop (which we just deal with), but the other ones cause problems. So, they're all getting replaced, it appears.

I'll let him know to call the 800 number.

Also, you can set (in Time and Date System Preferences) the mac to use a network time server, which will automatically check with a server to see if the time is correct, and if not, change the time to what it's supposed to be.

The problem with the date and time is that, when the auto update is ON it will randomly lose several hours. Once we open the prefrences, it will fix itself. I had to turn it off on my iMac for the few weeks that they changed the dates to go to DST becasue apparently Apple's time servers weren't updated. As well as that seems to crash the computer when the phones ring. It doesn't crash now that it's turned off, at least, just kills the AirPort for the duration of the call. ... And means whatever I'm doing online has to wait. But we got new phones and once they charge up, that should rule out problem there.

The biggest concern is the crashing when plugging back in. We aren't 100% sure this is the CAUSE of the crash, but we do want to rule that out.
