Replacing Bridge on External Drive

My iomega 120 GB external hard drive fails to mount in OSX. I have attempted to find and repair the drive in disk utility, however I cannot locate it. Discussed the problem with iomege customer service and they recommended a data recovery service. Can I disassemble the drive and mound the hard drive directly into my mac to recover the data?

Aaron,

I had a similar issue with a external drive of mine (firewire) but it was not Iomega. I spent a LOT of time trying to resolve this with utilties I had, but I ended up following the advice of someone and buying Disk Warrior. You can buy it on their site and download it right away. They will follow-up by sending you a bootable CD via mail. So, overall, it is a great value.

Anyhow, it fixed my unmountable drive in a matter of time it took to scan what was wrong. Make sure that you can see the drive listed in your "System Profiler" for your firewire bus. If you see the drive or at least the unit, then I think you will be a prime Disk Warrior candidate.

If you don't see the unit in your FW Bus, other issues may be at play. Let me know if that is the case, better yet, let me know either way what your results are.

Scott,
The problem with my external drive is a malfunctioning bridge. I have a replacement bridge, yet I am struggling with the installation process. How do I go about removing the plastic clip from the disk in order to replace the bridge? Thanks, Aaron.

Thanks for the thread, but those are different issues. I can't pull the power clip and the other long plastic connecting piece from the drive and I don't want to break it. Is there a secret to performing this operation?

Sorry, I mis-understood what your issue was...

Okay, the long plastic thing, the drive cable, grab the ribbon cabell and pull out.. apply same pressure over the the length of the connector.

The power connector, use your thumb and index finger to pull out the connector, might require a little muscle. You won't break anything with it.
