| Cannot restore to the factory setting. My iPod suddenly won't mount and when I try to play it the "folder !" pop's up. Resetting does not work. Whe I try to restore in the updater "There was an error formatting the iPod" pop up. Format unknown.way to erase everything and start over? In the utility the iPod shows as 18.6 GB Apple Computer Inc. Is there and start over? Thank you |

| It sounds like there's a physical problem with the iPod -- like perhaps the hard drive is damaged or something. If so, then the iPod is broken, and can't be resurrected by reformatting/resetting/restoring it. Got an Apple store nearby that you could take it to and have them look at it?

| It might cost more than buying a new one. I think you are right it could be physical. |

| Having Apple take a look at it won't cost more than a new iPod... typically, the charge is around $40 or $50 if the iPod is out-of-warranty. It all depends on whether it's worth it or not to you to try and have it repaired, or to simply purchase a new one.

| $50 just to look at it or to repair it too? |

| I think just to look at it... it could be as low as $30, though, and sometimes they don't charge you to look at it at all... it's just hit and miss with the Apple store and repairs in terms of what they'll charge you for.
