Help!!! OS X won't boot after backup/reformat

First off, I know nothing about Unix. That said...

After backing up an OS X partition with Retrospect 4.5 (running off of an OS 9.2 Bootable Zip Disk), reformatting the drive with new partitions, and lastly restoring OS X to the new partition, OS X no longer boots. Shortly after the Mac icon appears, it drops into text and comes back with the following:

etc/rc.boot: can't open unput file: etc/rc.boot
etc/master.passwd: not a directory
ADB present

Using FileBuddy, I copied the rc.boot file and it seems to open fine with a text editor.

Is my OS salvagable or do I have to go through the whole install 10.0.3-->10.1-->10.1.2-->10.1.3-->10.1.4 ordeal all over again???!!! Should I have avoided doing a backup from OS 9?

I think it's reinstallation time. The reason that Retrospect took so long to come out with an OS X version of its software was the difficulty in correctly copying/backing up the entire OS X file structure, invisible files and all. Retrospect 4.5 apparently isn't able to do this.

Or try PsyncX

You could also try PsyncX. It works along the same lines as CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) except it is absolutely free! :-) You can download it from http://www.VersionTracker.com or from my website http://sourceforge.net/projects/psyncx

Let me know what you think,

David
