Mac Os X 10.2.8 Crashes When Using 2 Monitors

I just connected a second monitor to my vintage 400 MHz G4 PowerMac with a video card (ATI) I have used off and on for several years. Much to my dismay, I began experiencing crashes under 10.2.8 which has never happened to me before in OS X.

The crashes can be reliably triggered when I open up Screen Effects within my System Preferences. If I choose a screen saver that uses photo images, it will almost always crash upon clicking the test button.

Sometimes it crashes when actually running the screen saver live.

And now I am getting crashes in Dreamweaver MX while trying to rearrange palettes on the two monitors.

Does 10.2.8 have a known problem with running dual monitors? Is there a workaround?

Thanks...
