Root Device problem in OS X server

Here is the background:
My CD Rom is not an Apple product it hadd blown about 2 years ago. My HD is also not stock but a 20 GIG

I have a Beige G3 that will accept OS X and all other OS EXCEPT OS X SERVER 10 1.2 which I just got.

What happens it that is asks for a root device: which I cannot find. Or rather that It will not accept the HD that I want to install in. I am wondering if the CD ROM mght be this problem and if so is there a work around or do I got to go and find a genuine Apple CD Rom

Please If you have any information on this I could use the help. Apples web site sucks for this kind of support
