email program for mac osx

Hi everyone,

I've just got a new computer with the latest os system on it - Yipee

I'm used to using Outlook Express on OS9 for my emails - is this the usual one to use on this new system? If not, what should I be using? (I don't like the mail programme that comes with the system.)

How can I transfer all the messages from my old computer to the new one?

I also need to know how I can transfer my favourites from internet explorer on the old computer?

Thanks for any help.

Dawn

You will probably use Mail, the email app that is bundled with MacOS X. It provides easy import of OE mail. When I bought my MacOS X computer, I networked worked it with my old Mac and copied every file over. I then imported my email from Eudora with ease. You can do the same thing with OE.

As I said in my previous post I don't like the Mail programme that comes with the OS as it's a bit basic.

Its true, it is basic but i don't think id ever use anything else. I find it just right, reliable, stable...

Plus there are good plugins for it out there if you ever do need more from it. Also like the way PGP works with it.

I used to use Eudora and Entourage, not going back.

But thats just my opinion.

Have you actually tried using it a while? You have nothing to lose by trying it or using it in tandem with something else.

Try Eudora. I've been using it for years and never have any problems. Great mail program.

'Outlook Express' does not exist on MacOS X, Microsoft 'Entourage', part of the Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac, does.

You and many. 'Mail' has its good points; yet, lacks in features of other MacOS X e-Mail'er applications.

Other e-Mail'er applications to consider are:

'Eudora' [shareware - or free mode - http://www.eudora.com
'GyazMail' [shareware - http://www.gyazsquare.com/gyazmail/index.php
'MailSmith' [shareware - http://www.barebones.com/products/mailsmith
'PowerMail' [shareware - http://www.ctmdev.com
'Thunderbird' [freeware - http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird

You can also go to http://www.pure-mac.com/email.html for links, etc., of all of the above applications; and more.

This is dependent on each e-Mail'er application.

'Opera' (a web browser, with e-Mail support) and 'Thunderbird' do not list 'Outlook Express' among the possible files to import. Here, it did recogonize 'Eudora' and Netscape 'Communicator'.
'Eudor' did list 'Outlook Express'.

On your original Mac, the 'Outlook Express' files are located in the 'Documents:Microsoft User Data' folder. In here should be the 'Identities', 'Outlook Express Temp', and 'Script Menu items' folders. The desired material [files and folders] is in the 'Identities' folder.

Once you decide on which MacOS X e-Mail'er(s) you intend to you - post such [the e-Mail'er(s) name and version number(s)], for further assistance.

Again, this is dependent on each web browser application, and whether you have the two Macs connected (via an ethernet cable - directly connected, to a router, or wireless) or intend to use a USB RAM [Thumb] drive to transfer the files, etc.

'Camino' http://www.caminobrowser.org 'Internet Explorer' (for MacOS X), 'OmniWeb' http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniweb and "Safari' can import your System 9.x or earlier 'Internet Explorer' favorites.
'Shiira' http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/index-e.html does not import bookmarks / favorites; but, by dragging the 'favorites.html' file onto a 'Shiira' window, one can generate a bookmark / favorite per each hypertext link clicked on.

Also, after importing - some manual operation may be need, such as with 'OmniWeb' to have the added bookmark(s) / Favorite(s) actually added to the Bookmarks menu.

On your original Mac, the 'Internet Explorer' favorites file(s) is / are in the 'System Folder:Preferences:Explorer' folder.

Please reply specifying the the web browser(s), and related version number(s), on the new Mac. Only then can specific assistance be provided.
