Auto Wake Up?

I want to use that program that plays an itunes playlist when i schedule it in iCal but i need to wake up my computer first. So is there any way to make my computer wake up at 6 so iCal Calling iTunes! can do it's thing?

Unfortunately - OS X does not include the familiar wake/sleep Energy features of previous system incarnations - and as such there really isn't a method of "starting up" a computer at a specified time.

Now that being said - I have actually managed a workable solution - but it requires a 2nd computer of some sort. This works for me because I have a PC I pulled out a of a dumpster and installed Linux on it to manage my internal LAN at the house. This machine stays on all the time. So what I did was download an install a little unix utility called "wakeonlan". I compiled it and installed it on the Linux box. Wakeonlan sends a special signal across your network to specific sleeping (not shutdown) computers and will wake them up. I simply created a cron job on the Linxu box that fires off the wakeonlan utility everyday at a certain time - and voila - all teh computers in the house are awoken at a specified time.

Granted this doesn't really help you if you only have a single computer - but I thought I would throw it out there anyway.

FYI - wakeonlan will compile and run fine on OSX also.

mind it only works with JAG. It will fade the music out then sleep you mac, then wake it back up again and continue playing. Perfect, maybe the next version will include which playlist to play.


This program asks for you admin password so it can set the wake up time, i can see it run sudo in to just before it sleeps, i want to know what program it executes to set the wakeup time (or maybe it is built into the app), is there a way of logging every unix app that is executed?


This was one feature that was sorely missed from Mac OS9, auto wakeup. Horray, its back, just have to wait for apple to build it back into the GUI.

There is also a thread at MacOSXHints about using a component of the EyeTV pkg that will wake a sleeping Mac. Apparently the functions exist in Jag - just no EnergySaver interface yet. Note you do not have to install or own an EyeTV to use this technique. You only use a small binary that you grab out of their pkg.

It worked, except somehow my volume got set to zero when it woke up. So i heard no music this mornig. Weird.

Thanks a million for the link profx! It took me all of 5 minutes to try out iSleep and decide that I needed to register it. Finally I can use my PowerBook as my alarm clock! One step closer to replacing all material possessions with my PowerBook!

Got the binary from the new (1.5) updater and it works! Should make for some fun scripts! (Especially for sneaking onto my roommate's PowerBook! )

Cool stuff! Come on Apple -- get this basic functionality integrated more friendly-like into OS X so we get more cool third-party apps that use it!
