Why can't you boot from the CD?

I wonder whether the install disc is the one that came with the PowerBook?

Apple packs install discs that are particular to that item of hardware (i.e. I couldn't use my iBook install discs to install MacOS X onto my G4 tower).

Might be worth checking that out with your aunt (generous lady).

No, there is no way to reset the password without booting from the CD -- if there were an easy way to defeat the password protection, what good would password protection be?

You need to acquire a set of CDs or DVDs that is compatible with that model of PowerBook. I would recommend purchasing a retail set of Tiger DVDs. The disks your cousin lent you are probably grey-colored disks that are specific to a certain model of Macintosh, and it probably isn't a PowerBook -- can you confirm?

Try booting with the install disk in the drive and holding down the Option key instead of the C key. I have recently become aware that with some Apple DVDs/CDs that will work when the C key will not.
