| Red messages on Verifying disc..... A week ago my isync and Installer stopped working. I reinstalled them from the original mac osx dvd. They now work. (but now when computer restarts, a picture of a file appears just before the apple does??) then dvd player stopped working - so i repaired disc permissions and verified disk and that now works too. Computer is uptodate with firmware. - it has been running slow to date although 1gig ram and a imac 2 Ghz g5! However, when i did verify disc, a box appears saying: Disk Utility stopped verifying "My Mac' because the following error was encountered: ' THe underlying task reported faliure on exit' In the installer program the end of the test reads: Checking Extended Attributes file. Checking volume bitmap. Volume Bit Map needs minor repair Checking volume information. Invalid volume free block count Invalid volume free block count uld be %@ instead of %@)",2) 27784008 27782792 The volume My Mac needs to be repaired. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit 1 HFS volume checked Volume needs repair There is also no option to repair disc - it is greyed out. The disk is not protected so should be repairable? I run my business from this computer so need help please! I really hope i dont have to reformat disk like you would a PC! This is a mac afterall. Help!!! |

| You need to restart from the CD/DVD that came with the system so it's the boot disk and then repair disk on the HD. Alternatively, back up to a Firewire external using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner (I user SuperDuper and it works great). Then you can boot from that disk and repair the internal one. If you carry errors to the Firewire drive via the backup you can fix them once you reboot from the internal drive. Last edited by bobw; January 27th, 2006 at 11:09 AM. |

| You can also try going into Single User Mode if you're not that afraid of UNIX. Hold down Apple-S after the Mac startup chime and it will send you into a command line. The instructions on what to do are right above the prompt you'll be dropped in, but here they are anyways: 1. Once at the prompst, type "/sbin/fsck -yf" (exclude the quotes) and hit Return. This will perform a Repair Disk. 2. If you get a message in caps saying that somethign was modified, run the command again until you see a message saying that your Mac hard drive is OK. 3. Once everything is in order, type "reboot" and hit Return to reboot the Mac.
