Problems Installing iLife '06

I bought iLife'06 and iWork '06. iLife '06 would not install. iWork '06 does. I got a new copy from Apple. Same problem. Spinning beachball for ages, installer icon eventually appears, double-click and then (ages later) says it can't read the .mpkg file.

I've tried 'alt-dragging' the icon to my hard disk. I've tried using Pacifist. Nothing works.

Looking at other Mac sites/forums I think the problem is either due to the dual-layer DVD they are using to distribute iLife '06 or it's a problem with Mac OSX 10.4.4 reading .mpkg files.

Whatever I have paid GBP 50.00 for an uninstallable upgrade. My iMac is an absolutely standard PowerPC G4 so if I can't install it there will be thousands of others who can't. This is beginning to look like a major flaw in Apple's software distribution strategy.

Unless anyone can give me any ideas I'm going to get my money back

Can you create a disk image of the DVD using either Toast or Disk Utility? If so, you might be able to mount that and install from there. I guess it actually _won't_ work if the disk is unreadable. The problem could both be the medium (two times, I rather don't think so...) or the DVD drive you're reading the DVD on.
Dual layer DVDs should pose basically no problem, though. There are a lot of movies on DL DVDs, and they never pose a problem on any DVD players or DVD drives. Not that I heard of, at least.

I've tried that now and Disk Utility can't dreate a disk image. I'm not convinced it's my disk drive. I'd like to try another dual-layer DVD to be sure but I don't know how I'd recognise one

Unhappy Slowly But Surely

Very helpful discussions with Apple Support tech in the UK.

Pretty sure now it's nothing to do with my DVD reader or dual-layer DVDs. Look some interaction issues between installer and other software. I have de-installed Virex 7.2 temporarily and things are looking more responsive but still getting 'Open failed - couldn't open 'iLife '06.mpkg'

I have tried trying to install packages separately but installer is clever enough to spot this and is telling me that I am trying an unsupported installation and stops.

Loathe to follow final advise of Apple tech to do complete re-installation!

The battle continues!

I have the identical problem with iWork '06.
I am also in the UK, not sure if it is a regional problem.
I will call Apple and find out if they can send a replacement.

Is your problem with iWork' 06 or iLife '06?

iWork '06 installed fine. My problem is (still) with iLife '06
