Please help me re: address book

Hi there peoples

I need some help please. Am running Panther on my laptop and for some reason when ever i open address book the interface comes up... but when
I do anything at all inside the program, it doesnt do anything except
clock for ever. I have tried putting the prefs in the trash and mending the
permissions in the Disk Utility but no result. Please can some one out there maybe give me a suggestion of what i could do to restore the use of this handy little program...
