Jumping to an item by keypress in Finder

If I have my applications folder open in Finder, pressing 'S' will highlight Safari, pressing 'S' again will highlight Stickies. Pressings again will go back to Safari and so on. I have many more applications that begin with the letter 'S' so I don't understand this behaviour at all? why does it just between these two?....also sometimes pressing the button seems to do nothing, and I have to wait a second or two.

I would have thought that Finder would jump to the first app starting with the letter 'S', and each press would go to the next one, but it doesn't.

Pressing S once goes to your first S-application, pressing S twice goes to the closest application to "Ss".

Try S then Tab from one to the next.
