Missing iPhotos on Backup and Live

hello, i've run into some trouble with my iphoto album and, in turn, discovered some errors in past iphoto archives.

first off, my entire 2004 and 2005 albums disappeared for an unknown reason the other day. i do not know how long they have been gone. these are photos i did not necessarily have in any albums per se. oddly, they DO exist in the iphoto library folder, albeit only up until september 2005.

this lead me to look at my back up archives, which i have on both an external drive and a burned DVD. my last archive was january 15, 2006. in both archives here, too, i have all photos up until september 2005 only. thus, my january back up didn't get the photos from september 2005 to january 2006 and i didn't notice! (i didn't think i needed to double check the directories)

i have searched my computer and can't find any photos from september 2005 to january 2006. it's killing me as much for my curiousity as the actual photos (a lot of them are on ophoto, so i have do some sort of a backup for worst case)

my question is two parts:
1--any idea what happened to my photos?
2--why didn't an archive work in entirety?

Look in the "Originals" folder further down the list. All my photos are there.

And, yes, the dated folders and contents stop at Sept 2005 too.

I thought it was due to me upgrading to iPhoto6.
