Cool Lost Audio in Flash & other apps

I have lost audio playback for ALL flash files.
And some .apps have lost their sound effects :-( too!

I have the latest flash player (beta 9)
I have Flash Professional 8 installed.
I have the latest version of QT but this loss of playback happened before
I installed T 7.1 so me thinks it is not related to that.

My box is a Machine Name: iMac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac8,1
CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 600 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.2.2f1
Serial Number: W843xxxxxxxxx

OSX = 10.4.6 and has been rock solid for months.
The last software, 3rd party plug, that I upgraded was "Menu Machine" for Adobe GoLive and all was working fine before and after that as well.
So I don' t have any idea what could be "eating" away at my audio playback???

I also loaded a flash site that had some AV content and although the video files seem to play fine.. the audio is toatlly absent. I checked all my system prefs - ramped the vol up and down in the players as well as the system controls --- all to no avail.

Anyone out there have any idea what I can do to restore playback of flash files and other application sound effects????

The only NON apple stuff in the preferences are: Deja Vu , Flip4Mac WMV, Growl, Little Snitch, Mouseworks, Pen Tablet (Wacom), Stuffit AVR, and Wacom Tablet.

I have restarted the system several times - and disabled and un-installed/removed several other 3rd party apps that I thoght might be conflicting... but nothing seems to work.

Any and all suggestions will be welcome - but a quick easy solution would be priceless. Especiall as I am trying to convert a lot of audio files to flash for use on the web... not being able to hear the conversions makes this computer - nearly worthless.

Help me Oh-Bee-Whan! you are my only hope!!!

TIA

Zargon

This sounds like a semi-common problem that forunately does have a quick & easy solution. Try this:

Open Audio Midi Setup ("/Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup.app"), and in the Audio Output section, set the format to 44100 Hz (which is the default, but it can get changed sometimes for some reason). That should do it. You might need to quit + reload problematic apps afterwards to get the audio back.

If not, I recommend opening a file in GarageBand. Just open it, then quit. This has also been known to fix the problem (although I think it's exactly equivalent to the Audio Midi Setup approach).

Hope this helps.
