VHS to Mac Update please

I can't find the info but am sure it has been covered on the site.

I have about 10 hours of VHS old home movies to convert to my Mac for editing on either iMovie or the other HD Pro software - but what's the best way to do it?

Buy a converter? Which one? Is Miglia TVMax any good?

I know i could do it with a camcorder but I don't have one. Would it be better to get one or buy a converter kit?

I also have some old Super8 film which is being put on DVD by a company. How would I get the footage off that DVD (do they routinely protect it?) onto my Mac?

I would be soooo grateful for a little direction as there seems to be a lot of info out there. Thanks soooo much

Matt

For getting analog video into your Mac, ElGato's stuff seems to be very popular, and the EyeTV 250 would probably suit your needs (and work as a TV tuner as well).

As for getting video from a DVD onto your Mac, I use MacTheRipper and find it works 99% of the time. You can then use HandBrake to convert the DVD video to other formats.

You don't need MacTheRipper for DVDs that aren't copy protected.

Just use Handbrake (or whatever) to convert from the VIDEO_TS
file on your DVD.

Or Just drag the contents of the DVD onto your HD. DVDPlayer
will happily read a VIDEO_TS folder.

the eyetv 250 is what i plan on getting to do this kind of thing for me, as soon as i can find one. they seemed to have disappeared, no one, not even elgato, has them. i can't even find it in the apple store online like when they first came out. was it that big a hit?

Try googling it. I didn't go into much depth, but I see all
kinds of sources. Some even reputable.

The Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge worked well for me. Using the output from a VCR connected through the bridge and directly into iMovie makes editing and burning to CD's or DVD's fairly simple.

I got my bridge a couple years ago for ~$160. Its retail price is higher now, but it can be found on eBay for less.

but when you goto those sources, they are out of stock, backordered, or pre-purches. noone has one on hand.
