Yahoo Games: Word Racer

With system 10.4, using either Safari or Firefox, I get a weird set of essentially unreadable fonts when accessing Yahoo "Word Racer" and a few other Yahoo games. I can still get readable fonts with Explorer, but that application is no longer supported for Mac, and it breaks down and freezes regularly.

I am, of course, totally addicted to this silly game so this is a matter of cosmic importance! <grin>

Help, please!

Carol

Not much you can really do... as those applications are written primarily for Windows I.E... what version of FireFox are you running?

Firefox 1.5.0.5.

The issue seems to be fonts. On the screens leading up to the game, everything is fine. However, when one arrives at the first actual game screen where one opts to either join an existing game or initiate one's own, the font switches to a small, bold Helvetica style that is thick, broken and difficult to read. When the game itself starts, all the letters are too thin and pale to read. Firefox, in particular, seems to cope with applications written for IE quite well. Don't know why these silly fonts keep cropping up.

Firefox 1.5.0.6 is out. Try upgrading to that and see if it resolves things.

Upgrade to 1.5.0.6 in and problem still there. What's really odd is that I could see the game as intended using earlier versions of Firefox and Safari when I was running early versions of OSX 10.3. Started having problems with later versions of 10.3. Computer had major hard drive issue and factory replaced it, installing 10.4 in the process. At that point, the current problems began. I think I'll send an inquiry to Firefox.

You could always dual-boot to early 10.3, but that's a bit extreme.

Smile A fix!

I was having the same issue and came across your post while looking for solutions. I did some continued searching and found a fix that was apparently originally posted in an apple forum but then disappeared, and someone reposted at http://www.jasongraphix.com/archive/2005/06/fixation :

"for me, if i disable font "#HeadLineA", with Font Book, it changes the font within yahoo games but it's still an ugly cursive script font. i then disabled "#PilGi" font. it's much easier to read now. i'm not sure what determines the font but it's a work around."

the font is still a little weird but hella better than what you have above.

Happy racing!
