Mac Mail

I'm running mac osx 10.3.9 and have been having some trouble with the mail program.

It initially started in my "sent" folder where it began giving me the message:

"The message from Brett Hall <bretthall@houston.rr.com> concerning “Re: ....” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."

I have my settings to remove all messages from the server "Right away" but this message comes up on everything in the "Sent" folder... even messages that were sent weeks ago and I am online full time. I began copying myself on everything to work around this and have a copy of all messages sent,

Now I'm getting the same message in my "In" folder for new messages. When this appears it applies to everything in my in box... even messages that are days old and were previously viewed. I quit mail and restart and the message is there but this is getting old... fast! Again the message IS downloaded from the server immediately, I AM online and my online status for Mail says that I am online. I can click "Take this account online" but that doesn't do it... only the quit mail and restart action resolves it.

I've ordered 10.4 Tiger and trust the update will resolve the problem but can you help me out in the meantime?
