Can't use firewire interface to ext. hdd

I bought a WD My Book Pro external HDD that has USB 2.0, firewire 400 AND firewire 800 interfaces...all cables included!

Nice deal, but when I mount the drive via either firewire interface (have tried multiple ports), my Canon Optura 20 DV camera is not recognized.

I have resigned to using USB 2.0 for now. WD has been no help whatsoever.

Do you think this is an issue with the firewire bus on the new Mactels, or maybe my camera is too old? I don't have any other cameras to try.

Last response to support:
Here's a link to Canon support for what I am talking about:

I can capture video from this camera with no problem....UNLESS I have my HDD hooked up to any other firewire port.

I will let you know the results of my test tonight, as I am taking the Canon out of the picture. (see first response)

******RESULTS******

1) Plugged in a different external HDD in a BYTECC enclosure via firewire 400.
No problem.

2) Plugged in WD My Book Pro 500GB external HDD drive.
BYTECC external disappeared and got warning as if I unplugged without unmounting.

3) Unplugged and re-plugged BYTECC drive.
No problem. Both firewire 400 and 800 drives are mounted:

4) Unmounted and unplugged BYTECC drive, leaving My Book Pro drive connectec. Plugged in Canon Optura20.
System Profiler doesn't show ANY firewire devices. Grab locks up when trying to do screen shot, have to Force Quit.

5) Unplugged Optura 20.
My Book Pro shows again and Grab works:

6) Unmounted and unplugged My Book Pro. Plugged in Optura 20.
No problem:

7) Re-connected BYTECC drive, left Canon plugged in.
Together, no problem:

*****************

So...it seems that the Canon Optura 20 and the My Book Pro don't play nice together.

I have access to a quad core power mac G5 too...not Intel. Should I try these tests there?

Any ideas????

Remember, Western Digital support was of NO HELP WHATSOEVER.
They just kept saying, "if you think it's the drive, you can return it."

Any help out there??

(Otherwise, I will just continue to use USB 2.0 for the WD My Book Pro drive)

Is there a time limit on when you can edit a post? I can't seem to edit anymore...unless I'm just blind and overlooking it.

Anyway, seeing how there are no responses, I need to remove this, because I'm going to kill the links on the server.

There's about a 1 day time limit on editing.

Scott removed the links, but we'll leave your thread open in case someone comes along with any ideas.
