Open With Default Not Working

Recently I had some wierd things going on with my computer. When restarting did not resolve the situations, I trashed the finder and system preference files. This resoved the problem but brought up another problem. I notice that my default application for use with graphic files had reverted back to Apple's Preview as the default application. I have repeatedly set up the default for the graphic application I want to use and after a shutdown and restart the default will once again revert back to Preview as the default.

I have tried various graphic applications and in every case shutting down and restarting results in the Preview application again taking over as the default application. I have also run the utility to repair permissions thinking that might have an effect - it didn't.

Evidently something else is corrupted - my problem is I don't know what. Any help you can give me will be appreciated. Thanks

Consider ... booting from your 'MacOS X Panther Install Disc 1', and via its 'Disk Utility' application - perform a 'Repair Disk'.
