User Font Collection Dimmed Off

Hi. For some reason my User font collection is dimmed off all the time and I am unable to enable it (such as Edit -> Enable). I am not sure when this happened, however it would appear to be in the last two weeks.

I have looked at the Apple support article on it, which was of little help (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302551). The result is that I have very few fonts available to me, as many of the common ones such as Times New Roman reside in ~/Library/Fonts. I have tried many different things, from deleting all of the fonts it there and installing them again (which works in some applications until I close Font Book) as well as many others.

However, I really am not sure what do to, to re-enable the collection, then I can go and re-install of the fonts one-by-one. Currently there is nothing in the Library/Fonts folder.

Can anyone help me?
