A program which lets you dial ordinairy phones from your mac for free

Does anyone know of a program which lets you call ordinairy phones from your mac? It must be free. I'd be calling to California most of the time. I've tried Skype, but it asks me for a "Skype Credit" everytime I dial the phone number.
Thanks in advance!

You'd be calling to California. Hmm... Interesting. Well, if you're _in_ California, I'd simply use a phone. I guess what you ask for simply _isn't_ currently free.

You’ve got to the end of the month to get a year’s worth of unlimited calls to regular phones in the U.S. and Canada for $15 from Skype. After that it’s $30.

I don’t know of any free service any longer, Skype ended free at the end of 2006.

VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) requires connection fees to traditional phone systems. Blame the phone man, not the VOIP guys.

As you know, VOIP need high speed internet connections. I personally decided (I am in the States) on Vonage. I got it before Skype came online and like the idea that I can dial 911 from it. Also I can call many countries for free on the $24.99 a month fee. Plus I don't have to have my computer on to talk.

Although I am a firm believer to each his own.

Ah, damn, so a free program like this doesn't exist? (No, I don't live in California haha)

Skype is free for download. It's also free when dialing from one Skype computer to another. The service to call from a Skype computer to a real phone, however, is what's not free (you have to pay the charges for the line use, I guess).
