can login to aim but not ichat

hi all
i've seen a few posts about problems with AIM and ichat, but none of the answers that i have read have solved my problems. I got a screen name and password but cannot login to aim. the process starts then i get a message

Lost connection with AIM
The connection to your host has been unexpectedly lost

and then disconnects.

I downloaded the AIM client and when i log in or "sign on" there isn't a problem. i would rather use ichat it seems to have a better interface etc

i've tried deleting com.apple.ichat.plist but it hasn't helped.

try this log on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190

Go to IChat > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443.
Log back in again.
