Exclamation Tiger network weirdness

Hi all. Hope someone can enlighten me with what's going on with my network...

I have a small network comprising four G4's, with one G4 acting as a server. I ran this set up with Panther OS on all G4's with no problems for a couple of years but thought it time to get it all up to date - so installed Tiger on all macs. I have also put a new hard drive in the server G4 and transferred all files (via Apple facility during OS installation) to that drive.

I've updated x3 G4's (inc server) with Software Update to most current OSX 10.4.8. One G4 still has OSX 10.4.6 installed. Icons on the server display strangely via the 10.4.8 macs but the 10.4.6 displays icons perfectly. Also we're getting strange messages like: "file is already open", "duplicate file name" which either prevent opening/saving Quark documents from/back to server. It seems odd that the slightly older Tiger system displays icons OK and the newer one not!

Also there's been files created, whilst distilling eps files to pdf, that just have the name: "Acr392510.tmp" These appear to be duplicate pdfs when opened.

Have I messed up anything along the way with the updates & server config? I find the whole permissions thing a bit baffling and would like to know best way to set up my server - with guest access or as part of group? I always used guest access before with no problems whatsoever!

I would much appreciate some advice! Cheers.
