Can I create a web AV stream using iChat AV?

Hi there,

I'd like to monitor my home using iChat AV and a computer at home.
Problem is, I'm connecting from my work, and am behind a monster firewall.

I am connecting to my home computer using VLC to initiate a one way video feed from the home user to the user at work, but it fails repeatedly. My guess is because of the firewall.

There's no chance of opening ports..

What I wondered was, might it be possible to create an audio & video stream from my home computer and make it accessible via the web ?

Any thoughts on this would be very much appreciated.

thanks,
beta

I know this is nothing like what you are trying to look at - but I just thought I'd offer my two cents.

5 years ago i set out for a way to remotely monitor my home as well. I played with Linux solutions, Windows solutions - most of which I put together myself. In the end, I purchased myself an Axis Network Camera. I've bought 2 more since my initial one 5 years ago .. they are, in every way, perfect for what I want to use them for.

Essentially a network camera has a webserver built into them. The New Axis cameras can stream MP4 with sound, and can connect wirelessly into your network. Very versatile.

I have 3 kids .. its nice to be able to see, from anywhere, how things are going at home.

Sweet. Thanks for the tip. I think I'll try to do it for free first (since I'm only trying to monitor my dogs) lol.

But I'm very happy to learn about those Axis products.

regards,
Beta

any other options ?

I realized a really ghetto way of doing this...

i can use vlc to see the video.. and nicecast to hear audio..

not in sync and terrible video ... but effective

any other options ??

the Axis thing is nice.. but kinda expensive

What about Quicktime Broadcaster ?? I haven't used it - but read about it extensively when setting up Darwin Streaming Server ... it may be able to do a lot more than what you are intending - but its free and should be able to get the job done.

Just a suggestion.

Quicktime Broadcaster looks cool, but it looks like I'll have to setup a QTTS and I'm not sure this will all work on 10.3 which is what I'm running on the machine in question... ?

I'm now loooking into VLC ..I was surprised to learn that it has a streaming server built into it.

Yeah - VLC is by by far the easiest streaming solution - but whether you can do that with a webcam, I'm not sure.

As for Quicktime Broadcaster - you don't need QTTS - you can use Darwin Streaming Server. I've set it up on 10.3 without a hitch. I was streaming movie files - not sure how much harder it would be to stream a Quicktime Broadcast feed. In any case - if you CAN get VLC working - go that route - much less painless.

There is software available for windows to stream webcams to the net .. such as Willing Webcam - but I don't know of any Mac software that does the same thing .. maybe someone should write one

it seems that VLC supports using a digital camcorder for a live stream, but only under Linux

anyone know of a workaround ?
