iCal reminders don't fire

Hi - for some unknown reason, my iCal (1.5.5 v670) reminders don't fire off anymore.

iCalAlarmScheduler.app shows up in my process list so not sure what's going on (I assume this is the app responsible for monitoring reminders when iCal is not running)

I just created a test event with "Message with Sound" "10 minutes before" leaving iCal.app running with Firefox in the foreground with no reminder to make sure.

any pointers appreciated in the interests of making my meetings!
