Kernel Panic!!!

I have a kernel panic on my G-4, Quicksilver, 733 mHz, OS 10.1.03...
The first line reads: "panic (cpu 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: Powermac 3,5"

Further down it reads: "Darwin Kernel version: 5.3"
"Panic: We are hanging in there."

How do I reinstall my OS without losing all my files? and....

How do I prevent this from occuring again? It just came out of the blue.

ALl help will be greatly appreciated.

Hey.. Calm down, art - if it has happened only once it's not the end of the world. Maybe it won't happen again (for a long time). You don't need to install your OS again after one panic.

here an other recent thread about kernel panics (and where to find more info on what it was about). also search could do.. don't worry too much after ONE panic. You might like to try to send a bug report to apple (from their site) attaching them the panic.log -- look for panic.log file in finder, that has all info's on why it occurred. Apple can tell you best why it happened in case you won't find it otherwise. See first the first link above, it may be to help. ^^

Appreciate the help, Giaguara, but how do I get rid of it? Do I reinstall OS 10 from SOftware Install CD or use the 4 software restore CD's?

Also, will I lose my files on the hard drive when I reinstall OS?

art - this isn't windows and you don't reinstall every time you have a problem. 9 of 10 times panics are caused by hardware incompatibilities, not the system. reinstalling won't do anything but waste your time.

what i would suggest is that you get fully updated to 10.1.5. every update resolves a few compatibility issues and maybe some of them will be yours.


the biggest hardware cause is ram. search this site (see link at top of this page) for 'kernal panic' and you will find lots more info on this subject. but keep in mind - it is not the end of the world nor something you can just get rid of by reinstalling your os. sometimes they are just a random thing. i used to get one about once a month while using 10.1.3 and before. no biggie. just reboot and keep going. however since using 10.1.5 and now jaguar, i haven't seen one in ages on my mac. most recently i discovered a dirty cd was causing them on our other mac. cleaned it off and no more problems.

I had a Panic about a year ago, rebooted and still running. It was my first and only panic. If it happens consistently, then worry about it. Back-up your important information and prepare for a reinstall.
