Question mystery preview icons on desktop

Using: OS 10.4.9 intel imac.
preview files with names like: 8vc68e0u.pdf and lk8w7yr5.pdf keep appearing on my desktop. Sometimes 5 or 6 at a time. When I try to open them I get "File Error: couldn't open file" from Preview. I usually just throw them away, but could I have some sort of virus? I can't figure out if they coincide with anything I'm doing. The only thing I can think of is that I use the print (in MS Word or Text Edit) and then click "save as PDF" from the print dialog box. Could these be temporary files when saving as PDF? Any other ideas?

Thanks,
-jill
