Mac OSX 10.4.9 Fan at high speed

Hi,

I have recently had a problem to start my G5 2 ghz Power PC. During start up the screen froze before the Apple menu came on. (random)
After re-installing OSX and upgrading to lates version there seem to be a problem with the fan going crazy. If I re-start the machine and wait to long before I log on (I have 2 kids with separate log in for all of us) the fan starts full speed and screen goes dark. Not possible to do anything other than force shut down after this.

I will no try to re-install the Power PC update (from advice in this site..)

Any other good ideas?

The Mac is about 2 years old and has been fine til this suddenly happened. I run 2 x 250 gb RAID system as I am scared to loose data from HD failures(done that before...)

Before you do ANYTHING, backup your data!! If your data is very important to you, then you should be backing everything up daily in case something happens (data loss won't only happen with botched updates alone). Here are some good solutions for network-based storage:

Once you have that taken care of, I recommend that you do heed the advice given about reinstalling the update. Sometimes reinstalling the Combo Updater will fix things. Also, have you installed any firmware updates that might have been issued by Apple for these Macs? Here's the link to the one for the Power Macintosh G5:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...areupdate.html

The other things you might want to try are reseating the RAM modules. This would require shutting down the G5, opening the side, pulling out the RAM modules and putting them back in. Sometimes RAM can cause weird kernel panics and lockups and reseating them should do the trick.

At the very least, you could take it to an Apple Store to have it looked at by those at the Genius Bar. They won't charge anything unless something needs to be repaired. If you have an Apple Store nearby, access the online store for it from Apple.com and schedule a time to meet one of the Apple Geniuses.
