| Mac Freezing with New Hard Drive, New Install I just formatted and reinstalled my entire operating system. I did this because my system was freezing at random intervals, and disk utilities was telling me I had bad sectors. I replaced the drive and all was working well. That was yesterday. Today, the computer started freezing again. Early this morning I had put the old hard drive back in as additional storage. I am not running anything off of the old drive, but it still froze. I am thinking I am dealing with one of two things. 1. Searchlight is indexing the old drive, reaching the bad sector and freezing. I don't even know if that is possible. I added the drive to the privacy section in the searchlight options, no freezing yet. I say yet, because something tells me it will. 2. I may be dealing with some other hardware problem, my memory has been tested and passed all of the Tech Tools testing. Has anyone using OSX10.4 on a G4 (Mirrored Doors) had any unusual freezing problems that I can test for on my machine? |

| If your system was working fine with a new hard drive, then you added your old drive (which was causing your system to freeze, apparently), and your system is now freezing again - maybe you need to find a nice dumpster to drop that hard drive into. You may not be booted to that old hard drive, but the system needs to successfully mount it, and keep it mounted. The old drive must not be working that well any more - time to say good-bye. ![]()

| I kinda suspected that, I had to connect the hard drive to get some images off of it. I took the drive out yesterday afternoon. This morning (right on schedule) it froze. I get into work every morning at around 7:45 and start up my Mac. Around 7:55 like clockwork it freezes. The morning after the brand new install, I was using Firefox and had a complete system freeze. I found info online about a Firefox 2 freezing issue with 10.4. So I started using Safari. This morning Safari froze up my system. It is without exception in the morning. Almost always around 7:55. I know there is nothing scheduled, because it is a clean install (unless there is default scheduling). After the crash I restart and it works fine for the rest of the day (no crashing/freezing). |

| Are you connected to an office network that may have other systems booting up before 7:55 AM ? Does your Mac completely freeze up, forcing you to shut it off? Or can you wait a few minutes and your Mac recovers on its own? As an experiment - wait until 8 AM to start your Mac.

| You seem to be having HARDWARE issues. What does the logs tell you (/YourHardDrive/Applications/Utilies/Console)?

| If I remember when I get into work in the morning I will post the contents of my console. I was under the impression that if it were a hardware issue I would experience the difficulty after every startup. I only am having freezes in the morning after the first startup of the day. It will freeze, I manually restart then it runs like a champ for the rest of the day. Tomorrow morning I am going to put off starting it up until 8:05am, as DeltaMac suggested, I think it will make a good test. My daily crash seems to be around 7:55am almost everyday. That could just be that people follow patterns. I come in at almost the same time everyday, start up after walking through the door. Then X minutes pass and then system freeze. Tomorrow should let me know. Till then... |

| Well, I delayed startup until 8:05 and just let the computer sit there. It froze. This tells me that a certain number of minutes pass by and then a freeze. What has me stumped is the fact that it only happens on the first startup of the work day. After the first freeze, no problems. Here is the system log: I started up today at around 8:01. The crash was around 8:15. My restart was at 8:18. | Try disconnecting anything connected to the machine, including the network, (Ethernet) except for keyboard, mouse and monitor after you shut down. In the morning see if the same thing happens.
