iCal alerts and Sync

I use Sync on two machines to keep iCal on both synchronized. It works fine, except for one small annoyance. Sometimes I create an alert attached to a calendar entry, to send me e-mail sometime before the event. And, yes, I get two messages, one from each machine. Is there a way to prevent this?
