return to Tiger from Leopard

I recently installed Leopard and have now discovered that Adobe Photoshop Elements doesn't work. A call to Adobe confirmed that there will be no support for that software to run on Leopard. There are also some other compatibility issues but that's the one that has introduced some real problems. How can I get back to Tiger? I've read elsewhere that you can use the Leopard install disk and do an

I don't know that you can revert back to Tiger using Leopard. What you can do is backup your data and do an Erase and Install using the system discs that came with your Mac. If you're Macintosh came with Tiger system discs specific to your Mac, then that's all you need to get Tiger back onto your Mac.

Thanks, I'll try it. If I install Tiger on an external drive, do I have the option of booting from that drive, and can I then use either OS?

If your mac is an intel model, you can install and boot from either a USB or a FireWire drive.
PPC macs will only boot from a FireWire drive.
Once installed, if you press and hold the "Option" key during power up, you'll be given the choice of which drive to continue booting from.
This can also be selected in "System Preferences" under Startup Disk.

Thanks to both of you for the info. Here's what I've found:
* Appears that I can do an "erase and install" on my internal disk to restore 10.4. However, I'm too goosey about the next level of side effect surprises (e.g., microsoft software that was updated to fix crash problems) to go that way. i could be much worse off than now.
* I have an Intel dual-core iMac but the system won't let me install the OS on my USB external drive, saying that it can't boot from that device.

If I eventually get a firewire drive I might try again. For now, the operative phrase is Benign Neglect.

Thanks again. Advice was much appreciated, even if I didn't get very far.

Did you partition and format the external drive before starting the install?
An Intel mac boot drive needs to be partitioned using the GUID format in order to be Bootable.
