Firewire OS X Tiger Not Bootable

Power PC G4 laptop, 12" 1.5Ghz 500 MB, 72 GB 10.5
I have a new Western Digital 320 GB Firewire External (from the Apple Store) on to which I have reformatted and installed 10.5 from the Install DVD. The Disk Utility reports that the partition is an Apple Partition Map, and I set the Startup Disk in Preferences. In spite of all that, on rebooting, the Firewire disk is not recognized as bootable, neither when holding down Option or just waiting for the reboot. I know that bootable Firewire HD's were a problem in the past, but I thought that was solved in the newer OS X versions. What now, coach?

Have you checked out Apple Discussions? Not to turn you away, I just know it is not solved in Leopard--there are conditions under which it will work. Also see SuperDuper's page for more info on this.
