iMac freezes and cannot be recovered!

Ok guys here's a tough one for you.

My iMac (2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 10.4.11) has recently started freezing up inexplicably. It seems to only happen when it tries to go to sleep (and maybe not a full sleep either, just when the screen turns off). The computer will go to sleep just fine, and will wake up just fine, but I will then find that I cannot do anything (and a few seconds later, the spinning rainbow appears...).

NOTHING works except, strangely, Expose and Dashboard (though Dashboard widgets won't load). The only solution is to hold the power button down to turn off the computer, then reboot. This has been happening every few days at least!

The most recent changes to my system are:
10.4.11 upgrade from 10.4.10
Installed 804.11n enabler (note that my router is only 804.11g, but I have another MacBook that I use to create direct connections with)

And I have a funny feeling that Azureus has been running everytime this has happened, but that might just be coincidence.

On a side note - this may or may not be related - my built-in AirPort is constantly losing the signal of my wireless network, and cannot re-connect (even though it picks up the network easily, it cannot connect). Interestingly, it seems to be losing the connection also at around the time of going to sleep - as I only ever find that the connection is gone after waking the computer (*again, not full sleep, just screen turned off). Turning off and on my Airport doesn't help - the only solution here is to reboot the router itself. Not the best fix.

I started noticing this at around the same time as noticing the freezing problem. I've had my router for almost a year now, with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Any help would be incredibly appreciated. Thanks very much.

-Mike

Hi Mike,

I'd look at the logs in Console to see what was happening before you had to shut down. Especially system.log and console.log - if you can't interpret the messages, post an excerpt of them, for a few minutes before the crash (it should have a lot of entries then), so some of us would be able to see what happened there.

system.log

My computer hasn't yet frozen up completely again, so haven't got those console logs yet - however it did just now lose the Airport network again. Even restarting the computer couldn't bring it back; I had to restart the router (even though it was broadcasting the name of the network just fine).

Because I restarted the computer, I couldn't grab the relevant console.log details, but here is what system.log reported (this may not help you at all, so I will also post console logs following the next freeze-up). The timeframe is from when I started using my computer about 1pm through to returning home to find the network gone (just before 9pm).

Thanks!

So it was trying to send commands to Eye TV helper. That could be one culprit.

localhost kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: 3

Previous shutdown cause 3 usually refers to hardware, so check your RAM. (try to get it misbehave with applications that need a lot of memory, or if you have other RAM to test with, check if it happens with that, or run extended Apple Hardware Test looped on your Mac (install disc 1 that came with the Mac, boot with D to get to AHT, and select CTRL-L keys to get to and off loop, there is no GUI option for that, then run for a few hours at least).

system.log

Thanks Giaguara - I'll try testing my RAM later today. I have played a few RAM intense games on this computer (Call of Duty 2, Halo - plus Call of Duty 4 through Boot Camp) and haven't had any problems, but I'll certainly look into it some more.

The computer did a full crash again when I came to it this morning. This time however the computer hadn't gone to sleep - I accidentally left a DVD playing all night. FrontRow worked fine, but when I returned to Finder I found the computer not responding very well (eg if I clicked on Finder, it would open, but not let me open any other folders or files; if I clicked on Opera, it would open but freeze when I try to go to a website. Same with almost every other program) and the clock had frozen at 6.16am (it was now just after 10am).

Here is the system.log for as far as it goes back. I'd had to restart the computer by holding down the power button in order to open the logs, so console.log does not date back to the time of freezing. Again, Azureus was the only other program running.

Another thing to note is that I recently installed Azureus on my Dad's computer so he could download some things. This morning he phoned me up because his computer would not respond - and his computer is a PC! (Without wireless, too.) I'm starting to think that uninstalling Azureus might solve the problem (but I'm no expert!).

Thanks again for your help.

Uninstalling that application is probably a good idea too.

Dec 2 03:15:03 OptimusPrime cp: error processing extended attributes: Operation not permitted
That looks like it did not like some attribute in periodic, but as that line is much before the crash, it seemed to work after (no more entries of anything for over 6 hours).

Dec 2 10:10:11 localhost kernel[0]: hi mem tramps at 0xffe00000
That looks like a message coming from bad RAM.
