Disassociating from iTunes

I'm a relative newbie to Macs, so I apologize if this question is stupid, but I've given it my best and can't seem to find the solution on my own, so here goes: How do you get Firefox to play a media file (say, .m3u files on emusic) on some media player application OTHER than iTunes? The same question applies to Safari. I'm only given one choice -- iTunes. And I don't want to interrupt my music every time I want to sample a seven second media file. As for Firefox, the "manage my files" section doesn't even show the .m3u file type. And as for Safari, I can't even find the file management/opening preferences.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by No Choice ... but you can set which media types you want the Quicktime plugin to handle in browsers, in System Preferences/Quicktime/ Advanced. Check mp3 and iTunes should not open.

Firefox has an extension for choosing players ... but the simplest thing, if you are talking about listening to music in the browser, is to assign all those types to QuickTime.

If you download the free Perian, from http://perian.org/ Quicktime will also handle a large number of other media file types. There's nothing to do but install it.

Leave unchecked, under Quicktime/Advanced, "Enable Flash."

If you open iTunes and look through it's preferences, uncheck any choices to handle internet media.

Thanks a bunch. Didn't realize it was a such simple solution. And, by the way, I've discovered that if you want quicktime to open up a new tab when it plays, it requires a shift/click.
