Please help the noob - .pkg Problem

Tried to run a search but couldn't find anything on this, probably because this too easy for most to even post.

When I have been downloading updates and applications recently, I click the .pkg files and they open in iTunes, which obviously does nothing.

I then try "Open With" Installer, and the Installer appears on my dock for maybe half a second, and then goes away. No error message, but I get nothing.

Any suggestions?

Try selecting the file so it's highlighted then doing a "Get Info" (File Menu or Command I) and see what app the Finder wants to open it with. The info is abut 2/3rds of the way down the window.

It should say Installer.app and you can choose this with the dropdown menu (and change it for all).

Installer.app is in the Applications/Utilities folder.

Ok. I changed it so all .pkg will open with the Installer, however, something is wrong with my Installer.

I click the .pkg now and the Installer briefly pops up on the dock, and then goes away after a half second.

Thanks for the help.

Consider 'repairing permissions', try again (double-click'ing on the '.pkg' file), and post your results.

I no longer have a Disk Utility in my Utilities. I know it used to be there?

Here are the list of my Utils
-Activity Monitor (Installer Icon)
-Bluetooth File Exchange
-ColorSync Utility
-HP Inkjet Utility
-HP Printer Selector
-Installer
-Java Folder, including "Input Method Hotkey", "J2SE5", and "Java WebStart"
-SuperDrive Update 2.1
-Terminal

The SuperDrive Update 2.1, could it be the problem?

Since my last update, I have safe booted and ran the Disk Utility from the install disks. I used "Repair Disk," and there were no changes, and then I used "Repair Disk Permissions," and there were TONS of changes.

I re-started and still the problem exists. I click .pkg, the dock moves slightly, then nothing happens.

Try running /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app by double-clicking on it. If it starts, use it to try and open your .pkg file and see if any errors are reported.

Another place to look is the systems logs. Open the Console application in /Applications/Utilities and see if there's any errors related to the Installer or the .pkg file you're trying to open.

In either case, post any errors you find here.
