epson 3800 leopard dilemma

I just purchased a refurbed MacPro quad core 2.66ghz with 9gb of RAM. I have a new ethernet networked epson 3800 that appears to set up and print fine from my other 3 macs on the network all running Tiger. When I try to add the 3800 using printer utility it gives me an error code of -9672 unable to add printer. This is with the bonjour printer, if I try to add it via appletalk it does not auto detect a driver and I certainly don't want the GIMP driver.

In addition, any time I tried printing via cs3 it crashes photoshop as soon as I click print. I am assuming it is the same problem but I am trying to solve one thing at a time.

I am considering uninstalling Leopard and installing Tiger as I have a set of discs from my other Intel MacPro but I have read that can be a tricky proposition.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I agree, there's nothing wrong with the gutenprint (was gimp-print) printer driver. In some cases, that's your only choice.
You also don't specify which Epson 3800 printer you have. Epson has had at least 4 different models with 3800. The C3800, the CX3800, and the DX3800. The newest, the Stylus Pro 3800 (with wide carriage for 17-inch wide paper) has a just-released driver for Leopard here - http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/s...form=Macintosh

I had the same problem after installing the latest Leopard upgrade. I found the solution on Epson's support pages. There's a select called
Epson TCP/IP" you have to make:

Follow these steps:
Download the Macintosh OS X 10.4 driver from the Drivers & Downloads page for your printer.

Open the file you downloaded, and follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.

From the Apple menu, select System Preferences.


Click Print & Fax.


If you’re using a USB connection, the printer should automatically appear in the Printers list, indicating that it has been installed. You can skip the remaining steps.

If you’re using a network connection, click the + icon and go to the next step

Click More Printers, select Epson TCP/IP, then select your printer.

If your printer is not displayed, input your printer’s IP address in the Internet address or DNS name field, then click Verify. Your printer should appear on the list. Select your printer, then click Add.
