Unhappy how do I burn a data disc instead of a music CD?

Boy is this a dumb question...but I can't figure it out.

Since my nasty little Iomega outboard disc burner's drivers are conveniently part of the system, it's a slam dunk to create music discs, but I just want some good ol' Toast functionality so I can burn data discs too.

Also, are these magically readable by Windoze machines (previously Toast'ed discs, not matter what setting I used ISO this and that, were not.)

What obvious step/control panel/app am I missing?

OS 10.2.4 G4

Thanks, and feel free to call me "Idiot."

Well, "Idiot", first make sure you have version 5.X of any kind of Toast (Lite [free] or Pro [$80 or so]). Select the first of the four large icons in the group of blue icons at the top of the window; it should say "Data disk" or something similar. Click "New CD" at the bottom of the window. You can rename this CD anything you want. Where it says "Macintosh XYZ" format at the top of the file list, you can click and select the format you want. Select a hybrid format to be able to share with Windoze users, and ideally you would select Extended format so you conserve disk space. Now you can drag files & folders into the file list to add them to your CD, and you can rename them to what you want them to be called on the disc without changing the file names on your hard drive.

From Apple.com

OS X you can burn data CDs right from the Finder. Just insert a blank CD into your Mac and format it when prompted. Your CD pops up on the desktop just like any other drive. Making a CD is drag-and-drop simple. Drop files on the CD. If you’re using a CD-RW that already has files on it, be sure to erase the disk first. When it looks good, press the burn button in your finder toolbar, or drag the disk to the burn icon in the Dock.

Yes, that's probably the easiest way, but Disc Burner can't make anything but data discs and Toast is standard. Choose whichever way is easiest.
