imovie help !

i have a DVD i burned from a VHS tape of family movies.

i want to transfer that DVD onto my macbook pro for use in imovie.

i was told i had to de-code the dvd from TS into a format which imovie can read.

i was told to buy POPCORN.

i downloaded POPCORN 3 and now i CANNOT figure out what the heck to do !

the POPCORN forums were not helpful , nor was the read-me file.

can u help ??
