Unhappy drastic iTunes slowdown

Recently, our iTunes has begun experiencing frequent slowdowns where the spinning color wheel prevents further action.

I would have thought the library simply had grown too large but these delays are very sudden and not just tiny delays but rather noticeable (~10-second) delays.

I recently installed a Facebook utility that was supposed to display on Facebook my currently played song. But I scrapped that. I have also used anywhere.fm recently. But I am not currently uploading any songs. Any ideas what may be causing this abrupt slowdown in the iTunes' performance?
