| Apps wont open after update I rarely update when I should but I was experiencing a moment of weakness when I clicked on update and the next morning when I tried to open Word, iTunes, Quark, Dreamweaver, Final Cut Pro etc etc the icon at the bar will start to bounce as if it wants to open then shuts down. I am a complete idiot when it comes to most things. I live in the sticks and there is no computer tech for 50 miles. I am tired of cussing and throwing things. Any help? | Repair disk permissions with Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). Get OnyX and run maintenance scripts on your hard drive. If it occurs after both those, post what happens in system.log or console.log just before the crash/startup issue occurs (same folder as above, open Console)

| I did exactly what you suggested... except the onyx, it requires os 10.5 or greater and I am OSX 4.11. I did download a couple of other fixers and unfortunately those will not open either. Same as with all other applications. The disk utility said I had no permission problems and it all verified fine. I mean I cant even get itunes to open. nothing and have like 50 or so Apps. | I got problems don't I? Downloaded Onyx for Tiger and it will not open. Rebooted, did not open. Nothing seems to open except Safari and AOL. Do I just need to shoot the dang thing and just buy me another piece of Mac? I've been reading everything I can and the fixes include everything from trashing the system and starting all over again to finding the bad font or something tiny like that that is stuffed in a cache or something. the best explaination I got was that my memory went bad because the error report Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001) Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0xc00001e8 Has something to do with not being able to access the memory needed to open the app. Since I can't open Onyx or anything else Ive downloaded to run a test I believe I might be screwed. It's been a wonderful machine prior to the update I did Friday night. |

| Boot in single user mode (cmd-s at startup) and type /sbin/fsck -fy it will start to run maintenance scripts, and should take a few minutes. When finished, you can reboot and it will boot to OS X. Sometimes fsck repairs more than Disk Utility does, and in this case it would definitely be worth it. Can you apply the 10.4.11 combo update again on top of yout 10.4.11? Maybe that would fix the issues it caused, without having to consider reinstall of the OS...

| Nada I did everything you said. No change in anything. Still wont open apps, even the ones recently installed. I did notice one report that said, DNSplatform send UDP failed. and Workaround Bonjour: unknown error. Dont know if that means anything or not. But since updated OS X 4.11 nothing has changed. Apps act like they want to open then fail. Quote:
