Most Apps fail to open after update

I rarely update when I should but I was experiencing a moment of weakness when I clicked on update and the next morning when I tried to open Word, iTunes, Quark, Dreamweaver, Final Cut Pro etc etc the icon at the bar will start to bounce as if it wants to open then shuts down.

I am a complete idiot when it comes to most things. I live in the sticks and there is no computer tech for 50 miles. I am tired of cussing and throwing things.

Any help? Please say it is a simple fix!

Looks like something is missing in the frameworks or can't be accessed properly..

1. Repair disk permissions with Disk Utility, (Applications>Utilities).

2. If it finds something it can't repair, run fsck. Boot to single user mode (command-s at startup), type
/sbin/fsck -fy
it will run the directory checks for a few minutes, and once finished, if needed run again, otherwise
reboot

3. If disk utlity didn't find anything to repair, find Mac OS X 10.4.11 combo install for PPC from Apple's website, and install it on top of your system. After this install, repair permissions as step 1. When updating, remove the extra peripherals.
