Image capture stalls when scanning

My iMac--2 Ghz Intel Core Duo--(10.4.11) has developed a problem when attempting to scan using Image Capture and my Epson 636U Perfection scanner. It will scan to a certain point then stops and Image Capture becomes nonresponsive. Never makes it to Preview. Problem first appeared on the 6th scan of a session and persisted since.

Scanner works with my MacBookPro (also 10.4.11) using Image Capture.
